Before and After Surgery

Initial Consultation

This is your chance to explain to your Doctor exactly what you want, and what your expectations and goals are. Your Doctor will explain your options, as well as associated risks. Most Doctors will require a recent mammogram, or will arrange one before proceeding. You will also discuss with your Doctor, implant shapes, size, implant texture, implant placement and incision location.

Pre-Operative Visit

Pre-operative visits are usually scheduled two weeks before the procedure. This is when the final decision on implant size will be made. Your doctor may also give you the chance to "try on" your selected implant size. All questions in reference to surgery will be answered. You may also need to sign a surgery consent form, as well as pay a deposit. Your doctor may  give you a pre-operative check list, which will advise you on preparations before surgery. For example, do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E or anti-inflammatory medication. You may also been asked to stop smoking 2 weeks before surgery takes place. These are all safety measures to ensure excessive bleeding does not occur during surgery.

Post-Operative Surgery

You will need to make arrangements for someone to drive you home, and take care of you for the first 24/48 hours. It is best to get as much rest time as possible in the first 24 hours. It is normal for your breasts to be swollen and bruised post-operative, so you should avoid activities that involve moving your arms above your head for the first 10 days after surgery. Your doctor will also prescribe you pain medication and antibiotics which should be taken for the first 5 days to prevent infections. Generally you can return back to work within 3 days of surgery, unless your work involves strenuous movements or lifting. Walking can commence within days, but it is not recommended you jog or run within the first 2 weeks. Gym/Pilates should not be attempted within the first 3 weeks, and upper body weights 5 weeks.
